FAQ: New Patients

Are there any forms I need to fill out?

Yes, all new patients must fill out two forms. A New Patient Medical and Dental History form and a Patient Consent form to allow us to access and record your dental records. You may find these forms:

1) On our website: We have an Online Forms section for you to conveniently download both forms. You may either: a) print and complete them at home to bring to your first appointment, or b) download and complete them in a PDF editor and email it to us at info@greenborodental.com

2) At our clinic: If you haven’t already filled out the forms prior to arriving, please arrive at least 10 minutes before your New Patient Exam to fill out the forms.

What can I expect during a new patient exam?

Our team of dental experts will start by taking a comprehensive medical history so we can identify your personal needs and begin creating a customized treatment plan for you. If there are recent records from a previous dentist, we will work with you to get it transferred over to our office to make the transition seamless and worry free. Our team of hygienists will then record important dental health information before completing a cleaning to make sure your teeth are sparkling clean when you leave.

How long will my first appointment take?

For a new patient exam:

Children (16 and younger) - it will take approximately 40 minutes.

Adults - it will take approximately 90 minutes.

FAQ: Adults

What do I do if I have a dental emergency?

Dental emergencies happen when you least expect them, and that’s why we want you to have peace of mind that we’re here for you. Please contact our office via email or phone and we will do our best to provide immediate care, regardless if it’s during or after business hours.

Not a regular patient, but have an emergency? Greenboro Dental is open to anyone in need so feel free to get in touch with us.

How often do I need to visit the dentist?

Part of our new patient exam is making a unique treatment plan for each patient that visits our clinic. This includes the frequency of visits as we recommend most patients to visit every 6 months. However, due to medical conditions such as diabetes or arthritis which can affect home dental care, we may recommend more frequent visits. On the other hand, if you don’t build plaque very easily and have never had a cavity, we might recommend less frequent visits such as every 9 months.

Is there an age limit for getting Invisalign?

There is no age limit for getting Invisalign treatment. Whether you are a teenager or a senior, if you are not happy with the alignment of your teeth and want to explore options for straightening your smile contact us now to schedule a consult.

FAQ: Children

When should I take my child to their first dental check-up?

We recommend as per the Canadian Dental Association to bring your child in within 6 months of their first tooth erupting. The best way to do this is to let us know when you are coming in for your next cleaning and to bring your child in so we can start to introduce them to the office and get them comfortable with the new surroundings. After this, we generally recommend at the age of 2 to bring them in for a formal new patient exam.

What exactly is a cavity?

A cavity (also known as caries) is a hole in a tooth that comes when dental plaque is left on a tooth surface and begins to produce acids and other nasty products that begin to eat away at a tooth and creates a hole in the tooth’s surface. However, did you know by the time you see a cavity it means that there is a significant infection of bacteria into the tooth and the tooth may need more treatment than just a simple filling? That’s why our team of dental experts always try to treat teeth before a cavity can make an appearance.

How safe are dental X-rays?

Dental x-rays (radiographs) are very safe. The amount of radiation that a dental x-ray produces is about the same as you would receive from a 4 hour airplane ride or an average work day commuting to work from your home. That being said, we only take dental-xrays when absolutely necessary and promise to use as little radiation as possible on all our patients.
